after
the aeroshow, we set out to see some exotica and
meet one of Lee's flying mates, Bob Morris, who
is a former Marine fighter pilot, USN Test Pilot,
and Commanding Officer of VMFA-115 (F4 squadron)
at MCAS Beaufort (he is now a G-IV and G-V pilot
with NetJets)....in view is one of this gent's fab
aeroplanes, and a hanger door that he is attempting
to finish in the SC heat of the day...click on the

according to Lee, "the aeroplane in question
here is a Pietenpol - a home built airplane designed
and first flown in 1928...most of the early ones
had Model A Ford engines...it became available as
a kit in 1934...in the sixties a lot of builders
changed to Corvair engines...the designer, Bernard
Pietenpol died in 1984, but the airplanes are alive
and well... You can still buy a kit today...Mr.
Pietenpol was a self taught engineer, who designed
his own airfoils and did his own stress analyses"...
